Why I’m loyal to mineral sunscreen

If you’ve followed me for a while, you already know I’m borderline obsessive about sunscreen.

Ever since I worked as a dermatology medical assistant, I became very aware of how much sun damage dermatologists see every single day - hyperpigmentation, premature aging, skin cancer, all of it.

And over time, I realized something about my own skin.

I’m a mineral sunscreen girl.

Not because it’s trendy. Because my skin genuinely prefers it.

Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to block UV radiation. Zinc oxide in particular is incredibly soothing and anti-inflammatory, which is why mineral sunscreens tend to work beautifully for people with acne, rosacea, or sensitive skin.

But here’s the thing: mineral sunscreen is notoriously hard to formulate.

Some are thick, chalky, and impossible to blend. Others are beautifully elegant and feel like skincare.

So if you want to wear mineral sunscreen every day (which I do), the trick is knowing how to choose a good one.

Three Rules for Choosing a Good Mineral Sunscreen

1. Look for zinc oxide first. Zinc oxide provides the most comprehensive UVA and UVB protection and tends to be the most calming for sensitive or acne-prone skin.

2. Tinted formulas are usually better. Tinted mineral sunscreens help neutralize the white cast that zinc oxide can leave behind - especially important for deeper skin tones.

3. Texture matters more than people think. If a sunscreen pills, feels greasy, or sits badly under makeup, you won’t reapply it. And reapplication is everything when it comes to sun protection.

Mineral Sunscreens I Actually Recommend

Not all mineral sunscreens are created equal. These are the ones I’ve tried, repurchased, or consistently recommend because they’re effective and cosmetically elegant.

EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 (Tinted). A staple in my sunscreen rotation. Lightweight, calming, and perfect for acne-prone or sensitive skin.

Colorescience Sunforgettable Flex SPF 50 (Tinted). A mineral sunscreen that doubles as makeup. The adaptive tint gives gorgeous coverage.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios Mineral Tinted SPF 50. Very fluid texture for a mineral formula and provides high protection.

ISDIN Eryfotona Ageless SPF 50 (Tinted mineral). Elegant formula with DNA repair enzymes and antioxidants. Great for anyone who is fighting active sun damage.

Skinceuticals Physical Fusion UV Defense SPF 50 (Tinted). A thin, liquid mineral sunscreen that layers beautifully under makeup.

Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral SPF 50. Great mineral sunscreen for body and beach days. Simple and reliable.

Vanicream Mineral Sunscreen SPF 30. Excellent option for extremely sensitive skin and fragrance intolerance.

Biossance Squalane + Zinc Sheer Mineral SPF 50. Hydrating mineral sunscreen that works well for normal to dry skin.

Supergoop Mineral Sheerscreen SPF 30. A newer mineral formula designed to be lightweight and easier to blend.

The Real Sunscreen Rule

People love arguing about mineral vs. chemical sunscreen. But the truth is that sunscreen only works if you actually wear it. For me, mineral sunscreens are the ones my skin tolerates best and the ones I reach for daily. And once you find a mineral sunscreen that feels good on your skin, wearing SPF every day becomes a lot easier.
